Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro (MEHFPGP), identified by CAS number 80714-61-0. It consists of the ACTH(4-7) fragment extended at the C-terminus by a Pro-Gly-Pro motif — a modification that markedly increases resistance to enzymatic degradation while removing the corticotropic activity of the parent hormone. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Semax has been characterised extensively in preclinical neurological research. Studies have examined its influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) expression, its modulation of dopaminergic and serotonergic signalling, and its activity in cerebral ischaemia and neuroprotection models. Further research has investigated its effects on inflammatory and immune signalling within neural tissue, and its behaviour in learning, memory and attention research models.
